Promotional Interview Strategies - Rules of the Promotion Game

When you go up for a promotion, people in your organization will talk about it and you. Gossip is something you absolutely need to avoid during this process. During this time, there is intense curiosity and it may feel odd not to share information with your co-workers. Here are several tips on what (not) to tell your friends and co-workers:

CareerLadder

  • Tell everyone your interview went okay (No matter how it went).
  • Tell them nothing about the nature of the interview and discussion (Whether good or bad)
  • Never reveal anything about the pay. It’s none of their business. (Besides, if they were interviewed they might be offered a different amount than you.)
  • If they ask if the manager was a good or bad interviewer, at the most say, “he/she was okay.” Any negative comments could get back to the interviewer and ruin your chances
  • If anyone asks “Did you get the job?” Reply it’s too soon to tell...even if your friends say that you are a shoo-in
  • Wait for the official offer (Or rejection notice) before sharing any information on the new position. Even then, don't reveal salary information or concerns you might still have. Don't indicate that it is a "perfect job," as only time will reveal that reality.
