The Smart Way to Conduct an Effective Job Search
If you are new to the tasks related to a job search or you have not been involved in a search for some time, it can be overwhelming. What do I do first, second, and so on? What is the best use of my time? How do I keep from running myself ragged or not doing enough of the right things during my day?
We suggest starting a daily log. Use the log to write down the date of job hunt activities. For example, the day you posted your resume on an online resource as well as the day you sent your resume to a company. It is very important to track the dates of interviews and the people you have recently spoken to about your job. Organization is very important when you suddenly need to keep appointments in many different places. A job search is a large undertaking and it often comes with built-in pressure. A good way to reduce anxiety is to visualize the major steps in the process. Having a "big picture" plan in mind helps to be able to track your progress as you take appropriate actions at each stage. Your job search is very much like using the steps when climbing a ladder. Your objective is to reach the top rung (shown below) and be employed. Obviously, reaching the top rung brings in income, allows you to pay your bills, pay the rent, buy groceries, make your car payment, etc. While the top rung (rung #6) is the ultimate goal, it is important not to lose sight of the role every rung plays in getting you up the ladder. Each rung on the ladder is equally important and advances you upward towards your desired goal. Some rungs will take more effort on your part while others are out of your control and may take longer. Be prepared for both. Ready to take the next step? Begin climbing the ladder:
